MACHU PICCHU
MYSTICAL ...Inspiring a sense of spiritual mystery,
awe and fascination

HELLO THERE!
Machu Picchu is an Inca citadel, set high in the Andes Mountains in Peru, above the Urubamba River valley. Machu Picchu was build around 1450, at the height of the Inca Empire. It was abandoned just over 100 years later as a belated result of the Spanish Conquest. It is possible that most of its inhabitants died from smallpox introduced by travellers before the Spanish conquistadors arrived. Over the centuries, the surrounding jungle grew over the site, and few outside the immediate area knew of its existence.
Machu Picchu means "Old Mountain" or "Old Peak". Many of the stones used to build the city weigh more than 50 tonnes and no wheels were used to transport them for the construction of the city. Stones were cut to fit together without any mortar. Remarkably, not even a needle can fit in between two stones.
Machu Picchu is also known as the Lost City of Incas is a mysterious wonder. A city of stone built without the aid of wheels or iron tools. It is the best example of Inca engineering. More than 600 terraces prevent the city from sliding down the mountain and a water supply system extends over a lenght of 1 km.
Machu Picchu is one of the New7Wonders of the World and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
